Donating vs. Dumping: What We Do With Your Items

Learn how we decide what gets donated, recycled, or disposed of—and why it matters for our community.

Not all junk is created equal. That old couch might be perfect for a family starting over. Those metal shelves could be melted down and reused. At Quality Job, we evaluate every item to determine the best destination.

Donation Criteria

Items in good, working condition go to donation. This includes:

  • Furniture without major stains, tears, or structural damage
  • Appliances that function properly
  • Clean clothing and textiles
  • Working electronics less than 10 years old
  • Books, toys, and household goods in usable condition

Recycling Categories

Materials that can't be donated but can be processed include:

  • Metal (appliances, shelving, scrap)
  • Electronics (even non-working ones)
  • Cardboard and paper
  • Certain plastics and glass
  • Construction materials like concrete and wood

True Waste

Only items that are broken beyond repair, heavily soiled, or made of non-recyclable materials go to the landfill. This includes:

  • Severely damaged furniture
  • Items contaminated by mold or pests
  • Mixed-material items that can't be separated

Why It Matters

Every item donated helps a Utah family in need. Every pound recycled reduces landfill burden. Our commitment to responsible disposal isn't just good for the environment—it's good for our community.
